FAQs - West Michigan School of Real Estate

Have questions about getting your Michigan real estate license? You're in the right place. Whether you're just starting to explore a career in real estate or you're ready to enroll in pre-licensing classes, we've answered some of the most common questions about the licensing process, our 40-hour in-person course in Kalamazoo, the Michigan real estate exam, and what comes next. 1) How do I get a real estate license in Michigan?

  1. Meet eligibility requirements. Be at least 18 years old and be considered of “good moral character” by the state.

  2. Complete the approved 40-hour pre-licensing course. Our in-person course fulfills this requirement.

  3. Submit a license application through Michigan's MiPLUS online system.

  4. Receive an MIRE number

  5. Pass the official Michigan Real Estate Salesperson Exam administered by PSI.

3) What happens if I miss a session of the in-person class?

Because the state strictly mandates the 40-hour education requirement, attendance at all scheduled hours is critical. If an emergency arises and you miss a class, please speak with your instructor immediately to discuss makeup options or tracking hours in a subsequent session.

5) After I complete this class, how do I schedule my test?

At the conclusion of the 40-hours, we will walk you through how to submit your license application, as well as provide associated materials from PSI.

7) Is there a limit on how many times I can take the test?

No, you may take the test as many times as you need in order to pass. You do have to pay the examination fee for each time you take it, which is $76, and wait 24 hours in between each test.

9) Do I need to find a sponsoring broker before taking the class?

No, you do not need a sponsoring broker to take our pre-licensing course or even take the state exam. However, to activate and use your salesperson license, you must be sponsored by a licensed Michigan real estate broker

2) Why choose an in-person real estate class in Kalamazoo over an online course?

Our in-person Kalamazoo classroom offers real-time interaction with local West Michigan real estate instructors. You can ask questions on the spot and also network with future local colleagues.

4) What should I bring with me to class?

Please bring a notebook or laptop for taking notes, a basic calculator (smartphones are not permitted during practice exam portions), and a positive attitude ready to learn. All required textbooks and state-specific study guides will be distributed on the first day of class.

6) Where do I take the actual Michigan real estate exam after completing the class?

The state exam is administered by a third-party testing vendor, PSI. There are multiple testing centers throughout Michigan. You will be able to schedule your exam date and location online through PSI after the state approves your MiPLUS application.

8) What score do I need to pass?

You need a 70% on the 115 question exam, or 80 questions correct.

10) When should I find a sponsoring broker?

Some candidates start interviewing before they get their license, while others wait until they pass their exam. Once you pass your exam, in order to use your salesperson license you must be sponsored by a licensed Michigan real estate broker.
